Description
Partsong for SATB, edited by Robert Parker and Sandra Tuppen
Words by T. T. Lynch
Elgar was commissioned to write this part-song in 1907 by the editor of The Musical Times, F. G. Edwards, who requested a simple hymn which would set the words ‘How calmly the evening once more is descending’. Elgar described the result as ‘homely but felt’, and in a letter to Littleton at Novello commented: ‘The setting is very simple – the words wd. not stand elaboration – but it may be too simple for your requirements.’
