‘I hear an army charging’ was written in 1928, the year Muriel Herbert married the man to whom the song is dedicated, Emile Delavenay. On her honeymoon in Paris, Muriel Herbert was introduced to James Joyce, and this song was one of the settings of his poems he asked her to perform for him, requesting a repeat of each.
