In 1938 Muriel Herbert had written Merry-Go-Round, songs for children with words by Ada Harrison, who was then a neighbour in Chiswick. Harrison’s poem ‘The Days of November’ was set by Muriel Herbert in the early 1940s. The composer’s daughter Claire Tomalin writes: ‘I can just remember my mother writing this small song with its elegiac feeling’. The title of the setting, ‘Hips and Haws’, was the composer’s.
