Description

Partsong for SATB, edited by Robert Parker and Sandra Tuppen

Words by Coventry Patmore

Elgar composed his ‘Evening Scene’ in 1905. It was first published by Novello the following year. The first performance was given at the 1906 Morecambe Competitive Festival. Elgar told his friend Jaeger that he thought it was his ‘best bit of landscape so far in that line’. Jaeger was much moved by it, its open fifths reminding him of Schubert’s song ‘Der Leiermann’.
