Description

Partsong for SATB, op. 56/1, edited by Robert Parker and Sandra Tuppen

Text Tuscan, adapted by Elgar

Elgar composed ‘Angelus’ in 1909 while staying at Careggi in Tuscany. ‘Windflower’, his friend Alice Stuart-Wortley, was its dedicatee, but Elgar wondered whether the devotional character of the piece, with its ‘Hail Mary’ and its ‘simple words’ might prove too ‘papistical’ for her, though it appears likely, according to Robert Anderson, that the version of the words Elgar used was his own.
